Pre-travel authorisations

ETIAS & ESTA: Travel Authorisations Explained

They are not visas but you may still need one before you fly. Here is what ETIAS, ESTA, and the new wave of electronic travel authorisations mean for visa-free travellers in 2026.

The basics

A Travel Authorisation Is Not a Visa

A travel authorisation is a quick online pre-screening that visa-exempt travellers complete before departure a permission to board, tied to your passport, not a visa.

More and more countries are adding these systems to pre-check visitors who do not need a visa. They are faster and cheaper than a visa and require far less documentation, but they are an extra step you cannot skip without an approved authorisation, an airline can refuse to let you board.

Because they apply to people who are already visa-exempt, travel indices usually count these destinations within ‘visa-free’ access. That is why understanding them matters even if your passport is ‘visa-free’ for a destination.

Europe

ETIAS (European Union)

ETIAS is the European Travel Information and Authorisation System. It is a pre-travel authorisation not a visa for visa-exempt non-EU nationals visiting the Schengen Area, which currently comprises 29 member states.

  • Expected to launch in the last quarter of 2026 (Q4 2026).
  • Followed by a transitional period of around six months and a grace period, becoming mandatory around 2027.
  • A fee of about €7, with the authorisation valid for three years.
  • Applied for online before travel and linked electronically to your passport.

ETIAS does not change the underlying 90/180 rule: visa-exempt visitors may still stay a maximum of 90 days in any rolling 180-day period across the whole Schengen Area combined.

Not to be confused

ETIAS vs the EU Entry/Exit System (EES)

ETIAS is often confused with the EES but they are two separate EU systems that work together.

EES (Entry/Exit System)

A border system that biometrically registers every non-EU entry and exit fingerprints and a facial image automatically calculates your 90/180 allowance, and flags overstays. It replaces manual passport stamping. Its roll-out began on 12 October 2025 and it became fully operational across all Schengen external borders on 10 April 2026.

ETIAS (authorisation)

A pre-travel authorisation you apply for online before your trip, expected to launch in Q4 2026. The EES happens at the border; ETIAS happens before you leave home.

Beyond Europe

ESTA and Other eTAs

ESTA (United States)

The Electronic System for Travel Authorization is the US pre-travel authorisation for travellers entering under the Visa Waiver Program. You apply online before you fly and it is linked to your passport. It is not a visa, and the final entry decision is made by border officers on arrival.

UK ETA, Canada eTA & Australian ETA

The United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia run their own electronic travel authorisations for visa-exempt visitors. Like ESTA and ETIAS, each is an online pre-screening tied to your passport rather than a visa. You apply before departure, and approval lets you travel to the border but does not by itself guarantee entry.

Fees, validity, and eligibility vary by programme and nationality. Apply only through official government systems and confirm current rules before you travel.

Use only official government sites

Travel authorisations attract look-alike third-party websites that charge inflated fees. Always apply through the official government system for the country you are visiting, and be wary of sites that promise ‘faster’ approval for a premium.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is ETIAS?

ETIAS is the European Travel Information and Authorisation System — a pre-travel authorisation for visa-exempt non-EU nationals visiting the Schengen Area. It is not a visa. It is an online screening tied to your passport that you complete before travelling. ETIAS is expected to launch in the last quarter of 2026, with a fee of around €7 and a validity of three years, followed by a transitional period and a grace period before it becomes mandatory around 2027.

Is ESTA a visa?

No. ESTA (the Electronic System for Travel Authorization) is a pre-travel authorisation for travellers entering the United States under the Visa Waiver Program. It is applied for online before you fly and is linked to your passport, but it is not a visa. It is a permission-to-board screening, and the final entry decision is still made by border officers on arrival.

What is the difference between an eTA and a visa?

An eTA (electronic travel authorisation), such as ETIAS, ESTA, the UK ETA, the Canada eTA, or the Australian ETA, is a lightweight online pre-screening for travellers who are already visa-exempt. It is faster and cheaper than a visa, requires far less documentation, and is linked electronically to your passport. A visa is a separate, more involved permission to enter a country. An authorisation is not a visa, and it does not on its own guarantee entry.

When does ETIAS start?

ETIAS is expected to launch in the last quarter of 2026. After launch there is a transitional period of around six months and then a grace period, during which travellers are eased into the system before it becomes mandatory, expected around 2027. Until ETIAS is in force, visa-exempt visitors continue to enter the Schengen Area as they do today.

Is ETIAS the same as the EES (Entry/Exit System)?

No. They are two separate EU systems. The EES (Entry/Exit System) is a border system that biometrically registers each non-EU entry and exit — fingerprints and a facial image — and automatically calculates your 90/180-day allowance, replacing manual passport stamping. Its roll-out began on 12 October 2025 and it became fully operational across all Schengen external borders on 10 April 2026. ETIAS, by contrast, is a pre-travel authorisation you apply for online before your trip.

Does a travel authorisation guarantee entry?

No. ETIAS, ESTA, and eTAs are permissions to travel and board, not guarantees of entry. They confirm you are pre-screened and eligible to head to the border, but border officers always make the final decision on admission. You should still carry your passport and any supporting documents your destination may ask for.
